We were looking for the Auburn train station on Sunday, trying to experience taking the train to downtown instead of using the bus, see if we can actually save some time doing that from where we live.  And that bring us to Auburn, and The Quarters, a New Orleans and Mid Western fusion cuisine restaurant, we have heard good things about it, and this trip gave us a chance to try them.

It was Sunday and we were there around 10:30am, so there’s only one option available to us at that time, the brunch menu.  It’s a set brunch and there’s only one menu, no other option available,  so you eat what they give you.  We are ok with that, save us some brain cells from deciding what to eat early on Sunday morning, win win~

It’s a charming little place.  Well, it’s a house, I mean, a real house, it’s a very charming little house.  It really is, you feel comfy as soon as you step in.  The whole place has an overall rustic feel, with a touch of hip dashing in it, a very quiet and comfortable environment to have a meal.

You are literary eating in the dining room of the house, it’s not a very big space, there’s no more than 10 table in the dining area.  Which is great, it gives you that private feeling, feel like you are eating in your friend’s house.

Right at the entrance of the dining room is where the house rules was written, all reasonable, no cursing on Sunday though, but that make sense too And hey, dancing and singing is allowed!! I should have sang, but I am not sure if I can actually sing or not, I don’t want scare people away, ha~

The menu it self is very regular, similar to other brunch/breakfast menu, with some southern twist to it, nothing really stand out, except for the grits, for me at least.  I never had grits before, just never had the opportunities.  The grits it self doesn’t have much taste (but strangely refreshing, I don’t even think you should use refreshing to describe grits), I learn that I should add sugar or syrups or sauces and spices to make it either sweet or savory, very interesting.

The food taste the way it look, it’s good, can’t find any flawed.  What stand out for me is the waffle, fried chicken and the salmon croquette, those are some of the best I have tasted.  The smothered potatoes however are a bit too garlicky for me, but it goes very well with the unseasoned grits, together, they are a great combination, maybe that’s the intention all along?

Overall, its a cohesive menu, everything goes well together, save me the hassle of trying to order a bunch of things that make sense, that’s hard especially at this hour when the brain is still craving for more sleep, so it is a very harmonious set brunch indeed.  And everything is organic, that’s a plus~

Oh, did I mention you also get a complimentary mimosa per order?  No I didn’t, so I am telling you now, that’s the one thing you do not want to miss.  You have two choices here, the lemon mimosa or the blueberry mimosa.  They highly recommend the blueberry mimosa, so that’s what I have gone with.  They are right!  The blueberry mimosa is very tasty and super refreshing, perfect for waking me up on a late Sunday morning~

Oh come’on, I cook and I am relatively skinny ….. note the word used here is relatively …

The service is what you expect from a southern hospitality, to sum it up, super friendly but at the same time, respectful.  They do their best to engage their customer in a conversation, but at the same time giving you enough room to enjoy your meal with your company.  But they are also asking you to take some responsibility in your dining experience, in the most respectful way of course, such as, you were asked to pour you own water and search and choose for your own condiments.  Your are responsible to pack your own leftover as well.

The overall experience is great, and I love the environment and the people running it.  As far as food goes, although everything taste good, but it left me with something to desire. I felt the set brunch is not adequate in representing their overall menu here, it is simply too plain and simple, it didn’t do them justice.  But from the taste of each item, I felt there’s a lot more good thing waiting for me here.

So I must go back again to try the rest of their fantastic menu to have a full understanding of what they offer.  So, till next time~

The Food

Overall, the food was good, however, it is missing in the wow factor, it was a very common and regular brunch menu with a Southern twist. The set brunch menu is very cohesive and well put together however. I particularly like the waffle, fried chicken, and the salmon croquette. The blueberry mimosa that comes with the set brunch is very refreshing, it is the best companion for the morning.

The Wish

Really hope they have other option in the brunch menu, at least options on part of the items. Imagine you went there with 10 other people and everyone is eating the same thing … it took some excitement out of the experience.

The Service

You are basically serve by one person only. But she has a big personality and very friendly, she treat you the way a family member treat you, you felt right at home as soon as you meet her, she is more than enough for the whole room.

The Environment

Quiet, peaceful, comfy and homey, you are basically eating in a house, and it felt just like eating in your fav aunt house, very relaxing.

Overall

The food was good, but it was missing in the wow factor, it was a very common and regular brunch menu with a Southern twist, although it is very cohesive and well put together.  I particularly like the waffle, fried chicken, and the salmon croquette.  The blueberry mimosa that comes with the set brunch is amazingly good, it is very refreshing, and it is the best companion for the whole dining experience.
