2018Street Food That Feels Like Restaurant That Feels Like Street Food | Bangkok | Thailand
From Seattle To Thailand, To Malaysia, And Back To Thailand, A Photo Journey Part 4
The one thing you do a lot in Thailand is eating, at least to me. Well, it really is not my fault, I mean, food is everywhere, and good food they are, mind you. So how can you resist not eating? So it’s the City’s fault really. Am I blaming the city for my overeating habit and a tummy that is rounder by the day? Absolutely.
Street food is everywhere in Bangkok, you can find them in almost every corner. And they come in all kind as well, from single food cart vendor to one of these in the photo. These are actually operating as a restaurant already. It’s a very complicated system collaborating with multiple vendors, they even have a team of waiters and waitresses who speak multiple languages, albeit only a few of the most popular phrases, their primary job is to sell and pull customer, mostly tourist, into their booth. I am sure there’s an underground boss somewhere … watching …
Normally, the morning street food businesses do not do night market and the night businesses do not do morning market. After around 10pm, all these will be gone and the street will return to the way it is.
These street restaurants here serves mainly tourist, and their menu does gear more towards foreigners, but there are still a good amount of Thai who eat here as well. Both worlds are served.
These grill tilapia are popular items on the street of Bangkok, their skin is cover with salt and grill on fire as is. The final product is a salt crusted grill fish. It’s really delicious, the salt crust gave flavor to the whole fish and the flesh inside are fresh and moist. You eat it with an assortment of sauces provided for you.
If you question the environment where the fish is cook at, well, it’s street food, it is how it is, you can always choose to eat in a restaurant.
Papaya salad, a local fan fair, hot and spicy, sour too, made with unripe green papaya, it’s flavorful and refreshing. I did not think I will like this, but I did, very enjoyable.
The Thai Clay Hotpot is another popular item among the locals and East Asians. Why do I say that? Because I observe most tourists from the west did not order this, most of them went for the salt crusted grill tilapia and various other seafood, especially shrimps and shellfish.
I am a big fan of hotpot, all sort of it, and a hotpot that is cook with a charcoal grill? Come on, that’s just way too awesome not to try!
You order what you want to cook in your hotpot by different combos. I went for the seafood combo, and I did not regret my decision, I had one great dinner.
Once the soup boil in the hotpot, you can start cooking anything you want in there (limited to what you order, of course), in my case, it’s the seafood I ordered, and also the assortment of veggies and herbs they provided, for free. Isn’t that nice? Yes, it is.
You can eat what you cook in the hotpot anyway you want, but the way the locals eat it is to wrap the cooked food in lettuce, along with the rice noodle, herbs, and sauces. Take a big bite, chew and mix everything well in your mouth, until all the herbs release their aromas, then swallow. Ah, a super satisfying bite.
That’s Thai food for you, it’s about the combination of flavors.
I was so focused on eating I forgot to take a lot of the photos needed for writing, like the assortment of herbs and veggies, like the salt crusted tilapia I ordered, like a lot of food, drinks, and sauces. Hey, this is my first complete dinner on the street of Bangkok, give me a break will you? >_^
