It’s one of those restaurants that sits quietly at one of those all so common plaza in the states that you won’t look twice or thinking twice of eating there unless you are hungry and you happen to be there.  It’s one of those restaurants where you have to be there at the right time and the right moment.

But we found this place because it was recommended to me by one of our Japanese friends, she highly recommends the place, so of course, we have to try.

For a small restaurant, they have a very extensive menu, a couple pages of it, wonder how they are able to crank out so many different dishes in that small kitchen of theirs.  We didn’t go for anything exotic this time around, we were sticking with traditional.  That’s the best way to get a feel for a restaurant, in my opinion.

It’s small, but it’s clean and neat, space are well organized, and feels spacious.  No music, but the environment is calm as is, and the ambient is low key.  In a way, this is due to its light traffic, but it works out great for the occasional walk-ins.

The chef and owner in front of his workstation.  He is originally from Beijing and has both Chinese and Japanese heritage.  Very polite, but very serious. He greets us once, when we come in, and bid us goodbye when we leave.  No conversation in between, very representative of the traditional Japanese chef image in my mind. Granted, we did not attempt to start any conversation either.

It is my intention to sit on the sushi bar and try to get some story out of this guy next time. Yah, I am like that, hehe.

I had the Chirashi, which is rice top with mix raw fish.  You can see it as a deconstructed sushi.  I like this over the nigiri sushi offered in most Japanese restaurant because the thickness of the raw fish on rice are usually not in good proportion. To put it frankly, the raw fish in most sushi restaurant, at least in my area, are too thin, for obvious reason.

Raw fish goes well with rice, but it must be in good ratio, so with chirashi, I can control how much rice I take with each slice of fish, regardless of how thick the slice is.

The raw fish slices here are perfect, not thin by any means, and not too thick either, just right.  Thicker is not always better, you lost the texture and you can’t really get the full taste of the fish if it is too thick.  the key is always “just right”.

The raw fish is fresh, very fresh, and it is rightly prepared, melt in your mouth. I do question the inclusion of super white tuna (which is not a tuna at all), but it’s only in very small portion, which is the only way you should eat this fish, in very small amount.

The rice itself is fantastic as well, with sushi restaurant pop up everywhere and still a lot of people lacking the proper understanding of what sushi really is, a lot of these so call sushi restaurant will outright serve you white rice instead of the traditionally prepared sushi rice and get away with it. Here, the sushi rice was properly prepared and it was flavorful and tasty. I can eat the rice just by itself without the fish. But why would I ever do that?

This is one very satisfying bowl of rice and raw fish, great chirashi!  I love shouting the word chirashi out loud …

My buddy had the udon with shrimp tempura, I had a taste of both and both were good, the broth is clear and flavorful but not overpowering, my friend agreed.

Overall, this is one great little hidden Japanese restaurant, it offers a lot more than just sushi, sashimi, and udon, it’s a full-scale Japanese restaurant, they may not have some of the more exotic items, but this is not that kind of a Japanese restaurant anyway, and the price did not reflect that.

Did I mention they even have ramen on their menu? This is not common in a Japanese restaurant, they usually only have udon but not ramen, this speaks to their versatility.

Best Sushi may not be the best there is, but it is your friendly neighborhood Japanese restaurant that offers quality everyday Japanese cuisine. I look forward to eating here again.
